Lincoln Through the Years
During the Depression years of the 1930’s, expansion took place on the Lincoln campus. A girl’s gymnasium, cafeteria, industrial arts rooms and a bus garage were part of the Federal WPA program.
Also, as part of the WPA in 1936, two artist brothers, Leon and Bronislau Makielski were contracted to paint a series of three murals in the cafeteria. The first mural is a winter scene of pioneer days, the second depicts a spring scene as residents are involved in a community workday. The third depicts an autumn harvest scene showing how the community has developed as a farming and industrial area. Residents and students are evident in the mural.
On May 4, 1938, Lincoln held a dedication for a 13-foot statue of Abraham Lincoln. Artist Samuel Cashwan sculpted the limestone depiction of our 16th president with the help of Lincoln students. It has been said that the class of 1938 even donated money intended for their Senior trip for the statue project.
This historic statue continues to reside on the plaza by Brick Elementary School.
